News broke yesterday that Kim Kardashian - the most famous but arguably least interesting of the Kardashian sisters - is engaged.

I use the term "news" loosely. For some people, receiving this information would have been met with a bewildered look and the simple question, "Who?"
But increasingly the middle Kardashian sister has been infiltrating mainstream media.
No longer relegated to pay TV and lads' mags, Kimmy K is becoming a genuine celebrity power house.

Last year she earned $NZ7.4 million and was named the highest earning reality TV star of 2011.

Not bad for a girl whose sole asset four years ago was her infamous derriere, as showcased - in all its glory - in an equally infamous sex with Ray J.
Before the Kardashians became reality royalty, the family's only real claim to fame was their father, Robert.

A highly sought after and extremely successful Hollywood defence lawyer, Robert K famously represented OJ Simpson during his murder trial.
Of course Kim K isn't the first Californian socialite to use her father's connections - and a "stolen" sex tape - to form a lucrative reality TV career.


In fact her background and career shares many of the same hallmarks as Paris Hilton's:
Family money.
Sex tape.
Reality television.
Endorsement deals.
Short and ignominious forays into the music and film industries.
More reality television.

But with yesterday's news, Kim K has cemented a fate that Paris has tried - and failed - multiple times to achieve.

She will officially become one half of a celebrity couple. Her nuptials to NBA player Kris Humphries (one of basketball's most valuable players, with an estimated net worth of $9.8 million) will see her celebrity stock soar.
Especially with her mother Kris managing the affair. Mama Kardashian knows how to broker a deal and all three of the Kardashian sisters have secured lucrative contracts under her guidance.

So for those waiting for the Kardashian fad to pass, or indeed weren't even aware it existed, hear this. Yesterday's announcement hailed a strengthening and cementing of the brand.

The Kardashians are here to stay. It's time you kept up with them.

It’s no wonder that Kim Kardashian was announced as the highest paid reality TV star in recent days. She has her fingers in so many pies she has money coming in from everywhere.

Kardashian recently stopped dating model Gabriel Aubry after a very short lived fling. Apparently Kim loves being wingle though, saying: “My favorite part about being single is just that I can focus on work and not feel guilty.” Is she turning into a workaholic?

After a relatively short (but long in Kardashian terms—hiya, Khlomar!) six months of dating, New Jersey Nets forward Kris Humphries popped the question to Kim, E! News confirms.

As one would expect, it was a proposal—and ohdeargodareyouforreal—a ring befitting the reality princess.

"Words can't describe how happy we are!" Kim told E! News exclusively.

"OMGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!" she wrote on her blog earlier today. "It's true! I couldn't be happier! Thank you guys for all of the sweet messages!!! I finally found my missing puzzle piece, I'm complete!

The proposal took place one week ago, on May 18, when the 26-year-old Humphries surprised his 30-year-old love in her Beverly Hills home. When she entered her bedroom, she saw Humphries already on bended knee with red rose petals forming what was by then a hopefully obvious question: "Will you marry me?"

"I didn't expect this at all," the bride-to-be told People. "I was in such shock. I never thought it would happen at home, and I never thought now."

Another thing she couldn't have expected: the size of that rock. Humphries' question was eased along by the offering of a custom-designed 20.5-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond engagement ring.

Yes, you read that right: 20.5 carats. Just so you know what kind of bauble we're dealing with here, it surpasses that of even a duchess, as Kate Middleton's massive sapphire engagement ring from Prince William is a relatively paltry 18 carats.

"I just knew I wanted it to be big," Humphries told the mag. Sounds like you got yourself a keeper there, Kim.

The surprise was pulled off—as all Kardashian surprises seem to be—with help from mama Kris Jenner, who was in on (the other) Kris' plans and who had planned an intimate celebration for the immediate family later that night.

"Kris really didn't want a big celebration, but he had jokingly told my mom he'd be fine if there were mini-horses there," Kim said. "Later that night, my mom brought out two mini-horses, covered in glitter, for us! It was hysterical!" (Sweet and all, just don't let Pink hear you.)

No wedding date has yet been announced, though if we can learn anything from the past, it's that it will not only not be kept secret, but will get a special place in our hearts. And our TiVos.

"YIIPPEEE SO HAPPY!!!!!" Jenner tweeted this morning of the news that she would once again be made a mother-in-law. "PALEEEEEZE GIVE ME MORE THAN 9 DAYS!!!!!!!! I AM BEGGING….."

Kim's sister Khloé Kardashian Odom (she of the infamous nine-day advance wedding prep) also wasted no time in publicly congratulating her sister.

"I can't believe I was able to keep this a secret but now I can scream all I want about it! Kim is engaged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!

"Kimmie I love you so much!!!! I would do anything in the world for you!!! Seeing you this happy in your life makes me smile daily! You deserve this happiness! Get excited baby!!!!! We r about2 celebrate!! :) Kris welcome 2the fam! Just so u know, u married all of us!"

Not to be left out, Kourtney Kardashian also got in on the excitement, tweeting, "My sister is engaged!!! I'm squealing with excitement! The princess has found her prince. I am so happy because @KimKardashian is happy!"

Socialite-turned-TV star Kim Kardashian says she was in shock when her boyfriend proposed

Reality star Kim Kardashian is engaged.

The 30-year-old socialite-turned-TV star and now businesswoman, who has been dating basketball star Kris Humphries for six months, has told People magazine she was in shock when her boyfriend proposed.

"I didn't expect this at all. I never thought it would happen at home, and I never thought now," she said.

Humphries, who plays for New Jersey Nets, apparently went down on his knee with a 20.5 carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond ring when she walked into her Beverly Hills home.

Kris Jenner, Kardashian's mother, had helped Humphries pick the ring and the pair celebrated with the rest of the family soon after.

"Kris really didn't want a big celebration, but he had jokingly told my mom he'd be fine if there were mini-horses there. Later that night at the party, my mom brought out two mini-horses, covered in glitter, for us. It was hysterical," added Kardashian.

"I think I haven't found one thing wrong with him, let's just put it like that."

Kardashian married music producer Damon Thomas in 2000. The pair divorced four years later.
